David Lange Memorial

Awarded: Best Public Sculpture, Metro Magazine Dec. 2008.

The Vessel symbolises chalice and journey. Oriented East - West, the form references the historic portage route between the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours. Enclosed within two landform mounds, the memorial elements include the vessel and sixteen poles with stainless steel bands of iconography to represent different ethnicities of the Otahuhu community. Text planks either side; phrases selected from David Lange's maiden speech to Parliament and the Oxford Union Debate.

Dimensions: Vessel Length 9000mm x Width 2500mm x Depth 1200mm. Pole height varies.

Materials: 3mm Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel, hand finished and electropolished. Steel and Timber poles, Engraved Basalt, Landform Earthworks.
