Artist's book. Private collection, Taupo. 1993.
The River references the nine bends of the River Styx and is assembled from nine folding, panels.
Wide leather hinges enable the bookwork to be concertina-folded.
Each panel is layered with twenty-eight small square segments, representing one lunar month. At the beginning, the panels appear heavy, darkened with small lead squares and acrylic stains. The panels gradually merge until at the opposite end, the pages are flooded with light and small squares of gold leaf.
A line of text by Jorge Luis Borges is embossed into the work and highlighted with gold paint: '...to gaze at the river made of time and water and recall the time itself is another river...'
Materials: Salvaged rimu, leather hinges, segments of lead and gold leaf, honey, ash, iridescent acrylic paint and embossed text.
Dimensions: Nine panels; each panel 500 x 270 x 12mm.
